The Roxie Lancaster Children’s Holiday Writing Competition is sponsored by the Arts Council of Montgomery, Regions Bank, Friends of the Public Library, and Montgomery City-County Public Library System and honors the late Roxie Lancaster, a loyal supporter of the arts in Montgomery.
Montgomery County children in 1st – 5th grades are invited to write a short essay about Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, winter, December or any other appropriate seasonal topic. Arts Council board members serve as judges. Criteria for judging the essays are: originality, imagination, and the ability for students to express themselves coherently. Students, parents, and friends are invited to an awards ceremony where the children’s winning essays are read aloud by a local celebrity. The event ends with a fun reception of punch and cookies.
